Lithography is a printmaking process created on the basis that oil and water do not mix. The imagery is drawn onto a slab of limestone with a greasy or waxy material such as a lithographic crayon. The stone gets treated with a solution of gum arabic and nitric acid to fix the greasy material into the stone. This gets repeated on multiple stones for each color printed. During the printing process the stone remains dampened, allowing the oil based ink to only adhere to the drawn portions. The stone gets printed under a high amount of pressure through a special press made specifically for lithography. These techniques date back to the late 1700s.
All pieces pulled from the stone are considered original. These are NOT digital reproductions.
